Hmm. I was gonna guess, plot-wise, that the glum-looking scientists were experimenting with time-travel, by sending cats through the space-time continuum. And the mice, mighty future overlords of tomorrow, kept sending the cats back dead until stopping by to say 'quit it.'
Still, sending cats? What, are you out of grad students or something?
