How is this actually possible? He is beneath the surface, which presumably is MORE than an inch or two thick, and his claws can still go through the subfloor, floor, their feet and still stick up 8" into the air? Aren't those stupid claws supposed to fit within his forearm? They aren't three feet long you know!
I know, I know, I'm being nitpicky over a visual effect.
In one of the X-Men Unlimited stories, a panel was drawn from Sabretooth's point of view showing that he had the ability to see the infrared spectrum. Presumably Wolverine also does (since their powers appear to be virtually identical), and he was thus able to use heat signatures to detect where the people were standing.
His keen sense of smell is similar to the Flash's ability to vibrate his molecules. Wolverine can agitate the "smell particles" of objects in distant rooms, then draw the particles to them, as they pass through the atomic spaces in solid matter.
