Ellis' many versions of the scene are actually an infringement on a very, very similar scene from the novel STAND ON ZANZIBAR...

John Brunner. The character of John C. Mulligan may seem very, very familiar to Ellis fans -- I can't believe the book isn't a huge, conscious or unconscious, influence on Ellis, with a side of Norman Spinrad's BUG JACK BARRON.
