Stay Gold, Ponyboy. Stay Gold.

I recently saw Quadrophenia on cable, and I couldn't get the whole Rockers vs. Mods thing out of my mind. Not two days later, I caught part of The Outsiders on tv. You know, that scene where the Socs and Greasers throw down in the park? Now, every time I read a comic, I can't help dividing up the characters into little social groups and subcultures and imagining the awesome knife fights they might have. I can't stop myself! A few of them are pretty easy.

Batman and Robin are clearly Socs.

Conan's definitely a Metalhead.

But, then I started to get a little confused. There's a lot of overlapping and contradiction involved in classifying some of these guys. For example-

Is Superboy a Nerd trapped in the body of a Jock? Or just a plain old Nerd?

Is Ghost Rider a Greaser or a Rocker? Can he be both?

I Just Don't Know.

I decided I need your help, fellow bloggers. In the spirit of recent interactive posts by Chris at the ISB and Devon over at Seven Hells, I've decided to open up the debate. Can you divide your favorite comic book characters up into easily distinguishable subgroups ? Can you imagine a scenario, a la The Warriors, in which a group of Hippies led by Angar the Screamer do glorious switchblade battle in an abandoned warehouse with the Pied Piper and his gang of Band Geeks? Would Raven and her fellow Goths fight Film Freak and the AV Nerds? Or would they team up to destroy the Jocks?

You Decide.

A great list of high school subcultures, past and present, can be found here .

Would the Sonic Disruptors be band geeks, or just regular geeks?

Definitely band geeks.

I wonder if they'll actually make an appearance in 52.

And lest we forget, Will Magnus was such a geek that he had to actually make himself a cheerleader, a jock, a nerd--hell, an entire robot Breakfast Club to hang out with.

Would that make Gold Emilio Estevez?

I think the Challengers of the Unknown were all jocks. Even Prof. Haley.
Whenever I read the words "master skin-diver," I find it hard to suppress a girlish giggle.

Cyclops is a mod, Wolverine is a rocker, but Nightcrawler is a mocker (gag copyright Ringo Starr, 1965)

Who would be king of the nerds- Bruce Banner or Martin Stein (of Firestorm fame)?

Yeesh, that's tough.

But considering that Stein's an alcoholic physics genius divorcee who's prone to blackouts and hangs out with a high school jock...

I'd like to see Ronnie Raymond fight Flash Thompson for leadership of the jocks in one of those knife duels where their hands are tied together. With "Beat It" playing in the background, of course.
